The book Ancient Windows from Stupava. The Oldest Evidence of an Earthquake in Slovakia presents findings uncovered during archaeological research of a building complex from the Roman period in Stupava. The masonry attracted particular attention, as it did not collapse gradually like in medieval castles, but collapsed to the ground. Similar findings are known from nearby ancient Carnuntum, where they were interpreted as the consequences of an earthquake from the mid-4th century AD. The tremors also destroyed a settlement in Stupava, less than 20 km away. This publication provides evidence of the historical background of the construction of this settlement, the relations of the Romans with the Germans living in the area, and archaeological findings indicating its demise after a natural disaster. The reader will also learn about the rescue and restoration of one of the walls, which included two windows - the oldest windows known to date from Slovak territory - as well as about other unusual archaeological finds from Stupava, which bring the building complex closer to the wider context.
